Understanding and Celebrating Difference. My Approach: Collaborative, Flexible, and Affirming

My Personal and Professional Commitment

As part of a neurodivergent family, and through more than 20 years of supporting neurodivergent people, I’ve seen first-hand how vital it is for therapy to be adaptable, respectful, and affirming.

I have a particular interest in supporting people navigating masking and rejection sensitivity dysphoria (RSD), helping them to build self-compassion, resilience, and authentic connection.

I also provide pre- and post-diagnosis support for ADHD and autism, recognising that the journey around assessment can bring a mix of relief, uncertainty, and new questions. Whether someone is exploring traits, awaiting assessment, or adjusting to life after a diagnosis, I offer a space to process, understand, and move forward with greater clarity and self-acceptance.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked in community roles focused on inclusive play and employment opportunities, ensuring that neurodivergent children, young people, and adults could access safe and meaningful spaces.

My Background

I also contributed to NHS steering groups dedicated to making therapy more accessible. These experiences, alongside my clinical training and awards for inclusive practice, continue to shape the way I work today.

I regularly attend training events, stay up to date with the latest research and best practice, and ensure my work is continually informed by neurodivergent voices, views, and lived experiences.

Alongside my clinical work, I lecture at the University of Chester on neuroaffirming practice, and I supervise, consult, and deliver training to other therapists in this area. Supporting colleagues to develop inclusive, flexible, and affirming approaches is an important part of my mission to shape services that truly meet the needs of neurodivergent people.

This is both a personal and professional mission: to make mental health services more inclusive, flexible, and emotionally safe for everyone. I believe therapy should meet you where you are — not ask you to change who you are to fit the therapy.

Collaborative, Flexible, and Affirming The Three Pillars

  1. Accessibility
  • Clear, jargon-free communication and resources
  • Visual and audio supports, including infographics, to make complex ideas easier to hold
  • Sensory-aware environments and flexible session formats (online or in-person)
  • Pacing that respects attention, processing, and energy needs
  • Respecting communication preferences — whether that’s plain language, visual supports, or extra processing time
  1. Affirmation
  • Recognising and valuing identity, strengths, lived experience, and communication styles
  • Creating spaces free from stigma, masking pressure, or judgement
  • Celebrating difference as a source of resilience and creativity
  1. Adaptation
  • Tailoring therapy tools (CBT, EMDR) to fit individual needs and preferences
  • Adjusting session structure, timing, and delivery to reduce overwhelm
  • Offering choice and collaboration at every stage of therapy
  • Designing resources that fit individual learning styles

Why This Matters

When therapy is truly neuroaffirming, it can be life-changing. It’s not about “fixing” you — it’s about understanding you, supporting you, and helping you thrive in ways that feel authentic and sustainable. For many people, especially those navigating ADHD or autism assessment and diagnosis, having compassionate pre- and post-diagnostic support can make all the difference in feeling understood, validated, and empowered.

My work — recognised through national and local awards for innovation and excellence in inclusive and neuroaffirming practice — is rooted in creating spaces where difference is celebrated, not erased.

When therapy meets you where you are, it opens the door to resilience, self-compassion, and genuine connection. That’s the heart of neuroaffirming practice — and why it matters so deeply. It also lays the foundation for a strong therapeutic relationship, more meaningful progress, and deeper healing with better recovery outcomes.

My practice offers compassionate therapy for every kind of mind and every kind of journey.

You don’t have to stay stuck

Things can get better.
And I’m here to help you take that next step.
